[Akira] Haraguchi used his own unique method of using sound connections to remember the numbers, converting them into Japanese syllables and making sentences from them.
He nibbled on rice balls during the attempt, and seemed to be calm as he recalled the numbers.
On completing his attempt, Haraguchi flashed a broad smile and the crowd who had gathered to watch erupted into applause.
Haraguchi said of the record attempt, which started at 9 a.m. on Tuesday and finished at about 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday: "I'm pleased I didn't make any mistakes. I'm so happy." via
